Who we are

Full members of the AMIMB belong to an Independent Monitoring Board which is attached to one of the 141 prisons, 10 immigration removal centres and short term holdings in England and Wales.

We also welcome associate members with an interest in penal affairs.

AMIMB Honorary Officers 2012

Angela Clay

Chair

My first insight into prison life was in 1997 when I visited East Sutton Park at the invitation of the chairman who I had interviewed for a gardening magazine.  Soon after that first visit I joined the Board and have since completed stints as vice chairman and chairman. As an AMIMB member I was very interested in the bigger picture of monitoring and was pleased to join the Executive Committee, was it seven years ago? I spent three years as chairman of AMIMB and am now vice chair. I am very encouraged by the progress that AMIMB is making in becoming a proactive organisation for its members.

Gordon Cropper

Vice Chair

I am a solicitor by qualification, and was a justices’ clerk for 24 years. I had a particular interest in training, both of magistrates and staff. I was appointed to the Board of HMP Pentonville in October 2003. I was joint vice chair in 2005, and chair from 2006 to 2008. My special interest is safer custody. I have been a member of AMIMB since 2003.

I now work part time as a traffic adjudicator. My other voluntary activities include being a member of the Lay Advisory Committee of the Royal College of Pathologists from 2003 to 2008 (chair 2005-08) and a member of its Ethics Committee from 2004 to 2007. I am currently a member of the Lay Advisory Group of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and a member of its Training Committee.

Helen Boothman

Secretary

After a career in marketing and fundraising I left full time work with a view to pursuing topics and projects which always interested me (some paid some not!)  At junior school I undertook a project on Elizabeth Fry and this curiosity to know more about life behind closed doors led to my appointment to the Board at IMB  Littlehey in 2004.  The prison opened a YOI in 2010 on the site so my learning never stops!

The curiosity to see the bigger picture and to contribute to the national conversation about prison, as an IMB member,  led to me joining the AMIMB executive in 2007, becoming Chair in 2009 for 3 years.   IMB members are in a unique position to see and hear what life is like behind closed doors on a daily basis.  Whilst sometimes being very frustrating I often feel very privileged.

Jenny Budgell

Treasurer

Having had the chance to visit HMP Erlestoke I wrote to the Governor expressing an interest in doing voluntary work at the prison and he forwarded my details to the BoV chairman and I was appointed in December 1993 and very soon after I joined AMBoV (now AMIMB). In 1999 I joined the newly formed BoV at HMP/YOI Ashfield which opened it's doors in November 1999. I remained on both boards for 12 months after which I made the decision to transfer permanently to Ashfield. I have been a member of AMIMB Executive for over 5 years and have been the treasurer and membership secretary for the last 2 years. Running my own accountancy and book keeping business and having an excellent team has allowed me to work on ensuring that we have an accurate membership database and the ability to contact many of the members by email.

We may all question what we achieve by being IMB members but I always ask myself 'what would it be like in the establishments that we visit if we were not there?'
